Kathleen's Cariole Ride is the perfect book to take on your vacation.

Stephanie Brown Aquino, San Dimas, California

Author Bouquets: Using Euphoric Comments for Sensible Success

Posted by Margaret Kell Virany on Sunday, July 22, 2012
When you shower a new book writer with bouquets, you risk assisting at the birth of an infamous author’s ego.

But praise and feedback are vital to a sensible author who learns to assemble them into a bedrock for later sales.  Here are ways I’ve used for you to try too:

How to Make a Readers’ Comments List

1. Just say thank-you and smile until you have something in writing from someone you know who has read the book.

2. Don’t destroy any messages that come in from or via your first buyers....

Who Cares: Selling Books Close to Home Can Be Unexpected Fun

Posted by Margaret Kell Virany on Sunday, July 15, 2012
The biggest challenge an author faces is how to be a seller. By starting close to home, I found it was an unexpected amount of fun.

I wrote A Book of Kells in 2003 to get my life together in a broad perspective that would interest all people of all time. If I had any talent it was with a pen.

My parents had left behind tantalizing remnants of their puzzling, adventuresome behavior in the form of assorted scribblings and snapshots kept safe in boxes. I was a minister's daughter, a voyage...

My husband and I  had an unforgettable time taking shelter in two art museums, two days apart, from a treacherous ice storm. This strategy can work for you too, with kids in summer. Here are 14 tips:

Nine Keys to a Superior Family Summer Road Trip

Posted by Margaret Kell Virany on Tuesday, April 24, 2012

Traveling by hybrid along the north shore of Lake Superior in winter enraptured my octogenarian husband and me.  How many more thrills and memories would a young family on a summer vacation get?  Here are the nine keys:

1. Travel the 700 miles from east to west. The two-lane velvety ribbon winds between spectacular vistas, second only to the Pacific Coastal Highway. Don’t turn your back on the mountains!

2. Be in Sault (meaning Falls) Ste. Marie, MI for the annual Engineers’ Day at the ...

Carried Away by a Six-Pound Book

Posted by Margaret Kell Virany on Friday, March 2, 2012 In : Books

Since I have too many books and am getting on in years, I thought it would be a good idea to buy  a Kindle reader.  Downsizing to an apartment or a retirement home would be easier if I could carry up to 1400 books with me in my purse or one hand.

Shortly after my purchase, our church’s  annual Spaghetti  Dinner & Used Book Sale came up,  an event not to be missed, with the best sauce in the world cooked by two scoutmasters. I wolfed down the pasta, Caesar salad and cake, then, full of...

Visions of Stars in My Head

Posted by Margaret Kell Virany on Friday, March 2, 2012 In : Books

Our annual Christmas letter to family and old friends had big news wrapped inside the good wishes. “Ho, ho, ho, Marg is entering the revolutionary post-Gutenberg world by publishing an ebook!” They all knew my parents’ romantic story and had lavished praise on the print version. I couched this as a genuine seasonal message but must confess visions of five stars beside my title in the sales catalog were dancing on a hidden agenda inside my head!

My connections are not pushovers; they ar...

Sunday Night with the Rabbi

Posted by Margaret Kell Virany on Saturday, February 11, 2012 In : Books

I spent Sunday Night with the Rabbi Reuven Bulka as a guest on his live radio show of that name in Ottawa. He's a world famous logotherapy psychologist and editor or author of 35 books. He may be most renowned for his conversion of American radio talk show host, Laura Schlesinger, to orthodox Judaism. Her later decision to recant shocked him.

He's a mesmerizing person who breezed in after the newscap at the top of the program had already started. I was on cloud nine in his presence and our wo...
